DALLAS - The board of directors of the State Fair of Texas will honor the 2012 DISD scholarship recipients at a luncheon on April 30th in The Music Hall at Fair Park.  This year’s keynote speaker will be Sarah Saldaña, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.  Fox 4 anchor Clarice Tinsley will make the presentations of the Pete Schenkel Scholarship Awards.

The State Fair scholarship program was established in 1992 to benefit students who attend high schools in the Fair Park area.  Each recipient will receive a total of $5,000 in scholarships, renewable in $1,250 annual increments to those who maintain a 3.0 GPA toward their college degree at a Texas university and/or community college.

A total of 37 seniors will receive the awards including: Audrey Acevedo, Cristina Andreu, Stephanie Hernandez, Jasmine Martinez, Susy Rodriguez, Terry-Ann Wellington, Erika Zapata, Irma L. Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School; Diamond Drayton, DeAndrew Hill, Terrika Witcher, James Madison High School; KaBriesha Barber, Staci Brundage, Jessica Handy-Bolden, Aminata Mboob, Tabari Mcgaskey Turner, Shai’ Moore, DaLinda Oliver, Cameasha Turner, Adam Wigfall, Shauntai Wooten, Lincoln High School; Daniel Chaparro, Gabriela Garcia, Patricia Garcia, Jose Lopez, Maria Martinez, Ofelia Olivares, Victor Salazar, North Dallas High School; and Alexander Alfonso, Jenna Bailey, Samantha Braun, Elizabeth Canelakes, Samuel Castillo, Dayna Martin, Augustus Miller, Stephen Slaughter, Woodrow Wilson High School.

For the 2012-2013 school year, the State Fair of Texas renewed $1,250 scholarships to 29 graduates of DISD schools who are making exceptional progress toward their college degree. The Fair also offers scholarship assistance to young people from around the state who participated in State Fair livestock shows.  Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas has awarded new and renewed scholarships totaling more than $2.8 million through these two programs.
